Hello, Lime Kiln community,
We had a lot to celebrate at Lime Kiln in May. We began the month by honoring our teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you to our PTA for the thoughtful gifts, and the parents and community members that recognized our staff with tokens of appreciation and recognition. This month also afforded us an opportunity to recognize our dedicated school nurses for all they do to keep our school community safe and healthy. Three of our students were recognized at the state National History Day competition and advanced to the national competition in June. Way to go Leopards!

Congratulations to our 6th Grade Students - "Read to Feed"
The 6th grade "Read to Feed" fundraiser and read-a-thon has ended, and we are proud to announce that as a 6th grade, LKMS students raised $5,420 for families in need. Congratulations to EVERY 6th grade student who took time to learn about communities in need, spoke to friends and families about donating to a great cause, and improved the lives of others beyond our community.
Environmental Steam Seminar
We are so excited to share our finished mural with the Lime Kiln Community. The students recognize the importance of protecting the environment. One of the biggest threats is plastic. Each year around eight million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, with 80% of the plastic coming from the land that is either blown into rivers, streams and even sewers.
The environmental seminar STEAM created this beautiful mural as a reminder to "Keep Our Seas Plastic Free." Thank you to Mrs. Spillman, the GT Resource Teacher, our 58 STEAM students and the Lime Kiln Community who donated all of the plastic caps.
Lime Time - Thursday, June 9, 3:15-5:15pm (Rain Date: June 13)
Our LKMS PTA will sponsor "Lime Time", an end-of-year celebration after school for all students on Thursday, June 9, from 3:15-5:15pm (Rain Date: Monday, June 13). The attached
flier and
permission form provide information on this event. All students must pre-pay and submit the permission form by Monday, June 6, in order to participate in this event. You may pay now via
Pay Pal or pay in person at the lunch time sale dates indicated in the
flier. Permission forms can be returned electronically or in person during the sale dates.

8th Grade Dance
Our LKMS PTA will sponsor the 8th grade dance on Friday, June 3, from 6:30-8:30pm. If your student would like to attend the dance, please complete the PTA permission form by Wednesday, June 1. All 8th grade students must have a permission form in order to attend the dance.
Parents/Guardians: We need volunteers for the 8th grade dance next week! We would especially appreciate 6th and 7th grade parents who would are willing to assist with set up and chaperone. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the dance if you are considering to serve on next year's 8th grade dance committee.

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony - June 15, 2022 - 9:15-10:15am
This wonderful event will be held in the auditorium at Reservoir High School (RHS), and will include student and staff speeches, a musical performance, and recognition of each student. Since the students will be walking to RHS to be in their seats by 9:00 AM, it is imperative that students arrive to Lime Kiln on time. This is a very special occasion for all of us at Lime Kiln and for your son or daughter. Unfortunately, there is limited seating. Therefore, two tickets will be issued to each student. The tickets will be sent home the week of June 13th with the students. The required attire for the ceremony is “dressy casual.”
Measure of Academic Progress (MAP)
Home report PDFs for the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) spring testing are now available in HCPSS Connect. The assessment was given to students in grades 1-8 in reading and mathematics. Reports can be accessed by following the directions on the main website. For more information on how to interpret the report and how the results are used, please visit the MAP area of the HCPSS website.
LKMS Beginner Band Class
For the first time, Lime Kiln will be offering a beginner Band class for the 2022-2023 school year for any student in grades 6th, 7th and 8th who does not know how to play a band instrument but would like to learn! It is never too late to start! Want to play Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, or Percussion? Now is your chance! Please contact Mr. Jackowski at

Reservoir High School Fall Sports
Reservoir High School will hold their Fall Sports Information Night on Thursday, June 9, from 6:00-7:00pm in the school auditorium. This event is for parents only and will provide detailed information regarding the fall sports program to include:
- eligibility & expectations
- how to register for sports
- physical exams and additional required forms/information
- a chance to meet the coaches and Mr. Lewis
- summer camp opportunities offered by the RHS Boosters.
We look forward to meeting the parents of our rising athletes on June 9th.
HC Drug Free
Life Skills Class for Students
FREE and back by popular demand. HC DrugFree is providing a highly interactive skills-based program designed to promote positive health and personal development for youth in grades 6-9. (For slightly younger or older students, register and we will consider each request.) We encourage siblings and friends to take classes together. This program uses developmentally appropriate, collaborative learning strategies to help students achieve competency in the skills shown to help students resist substance use (tobacco, alcohol and other drugs), violence, and other high-risk behaviors. Taught by dedicated adults and older students sharing situations your student may face in high school, college, and beyond. The next session will be held this summer, Monday through Thursday July 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. via Zoom. Summer Internships for High School and College Students
HC DrugFree is looking for responsible summer interns. Gain experience in areas of interest with the flexibility of working virtually from anywhere. For example, some students may want to assist with and be positive role models for the middle school students in Life Skills classes to be held Monday through Thursday July 18 to 28 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. via Zoom. Experiences will be a good addition to a resume, college applications and future job interviews. High school students may receive service hours for their work. Depending on college policies, may receive credit. Interested students should go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HCDFIntern to provide contact information. All students will be contacted after completing the online form.
Health Room News
Mask Update
All students, staff and visitors will be able to choose if they wish to wear a mask in HCPSS buildings. While optional in buildings, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health experts continue to recommend face masks as a precautionary measure.
Per the CDC, masks are required in healthcare settings, so students and staff must continue to wear a mask in school health rooms.

Google Additional Services
Google Translate is now available in Google’s menu of additional services on HCPSS issued Chromebooks for students in grades 4-12. Parent or guardian consent is required for students to access the tool/application. If you have previously provided consent for Google’s menu of additional services, your child will automatically be given access to Google Translate, and no further action is needed.
If you desire to provide consent for your child to access Google’s additional services which include Google Translate, YouTube (grades 6-12), and CS First (grades K-5), please complete the following steps:
- Log in to HCPSS Connect.
- Select More Options from the left panel.
- Select HCPSS Google Menu from the middle of the page.
- Click the check box to provide consent. Changes are automatically saved.
The Google Additional services will include:
- CS First for grades 4 and 5: This is an authorized Supplementary Digital Tool for creating interactive stories, games, and animations using a programming language called Scratch during the Computational Thinker unit.
- Google Translate grades 4-12: This additional service or authorized Supplementary Digital Tool, offers free service to instantly translate words, phrases, and web pages between English and over 100 other languages. Students will be informed when this service is allowable for use during classwork, independent assignments, and/or World Language assessments.
Indicators of Educational Equity Survey
All HCPSS schools will be asking for feedback from their students, staff, and communities to work on school improvement efforts. As part of our LKMS school improvement process, we are asking families to provide input about their equity priorities for our school. Please use the links below to complete the Indicators of Educational Equity Survey by Friday, June 17. We are hoping for 100% participation.
We will use your input, along with other school data, to refine our school improvement plan for next school year. The survey is anonymous and available in multiple languages. If you have children at more than one school, please complete one survey per school.

FREE Student Bus Passes:
HCPSS has partnered with Howard County Government and the Regional Transit Authority of Central Maryland (RTA) to provide
free RTA bus passes to students. These can be used any time between now and September 12. Please contact our LKMS Front Office at 410-880-5988 to request a pass.

RESERVOIR HIGH SCHOOL BOOSTER SUMMER CAMPS
Come out to sports camp the week of June 27 and/or July 18 at Reservoir High School. Camp is hosted by Lime Kiln teacher and Reservoir Coach Phil Ranker as well as other certified elementary and middle school teachers in the county and state. The camp is open to current K-8th graders and features many different sports and activities every day. If your child likes PE, they will love camp. Campers are split into age and ability groups to ensure that everyone has a fun and productive time. Full day and half day options available. For more information, please visit

RIVER HILL HIGH SCHOOL BOOSTERS SUMMER CAMPS
The River Hill High School Boosters are sponsoring summer camps at River Hill High School. The camps are designed to help young athletes improve their fundamental athletic skills. Over twenty different camps are offered this summer, including football, soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, tennis, cheerleading, art, and weight training.
